Extinction Rebellion Southwest Connecticut (XR SWCT) is a decentralized, self-organizing group of neighbors, activists, and everyday people rising together to confront the twin crises of climate collapse and democratic backsliding.
We are part of the global Extinction Rebellion movement—anchored in nonviolence, radical truth-telling, and regenerative culture. Our work is rooted in mutual aid, direct action, and systemic change.
To tell the truth, act now, and build a just transition that protects the most vulnerable among us—because a livable future won’t be handed to us. We must create it.
A regenerative, just community built on care, solidarity, and ecological sanity. We believe in rising together, not in isolation.
We do this by:
Opposing fossil fuel expansion and ecological destruction.
Defending democratic institutions from authoritarian capture.
Building mutual aid networks and post-capitalist alternatives.
Shifting land, food, and housing systems toward justice and resilience.
🌀 We organize in circles, not hierarchies. Every member has a voice.
🧠We prioritize the most vulnerable—our elders, our youth, our neighbors facing food apartheid or housing insecurity.
🧱 We build and we resist—taking bold direct action while also creating tangible systems of community care.
đź› We use open-source tech and transparent tools to stay autonomous, safe, and resilient.
📢 We expose disinformation and greenwashing, especially from corporate interests and authoritarian movements.

Let’s rise—together.
Our History
XR Southwest Connecticut began with a shared sense of urgency—and a refusal to stay silent.
In early 2024, as the climate crisis accelerated and local officials continued to greenlight ecocidal developments like Saddle Ridge and the Iroquois pipeline expansion, a small group of residents across Fairfield County began organizing. We were parents, workers, students, elders—people who understood that inaction was complicity.
We were inspired by Extinction Rebellion, the global movement that launched in the UK in 2018 to demand emergency-level response to ecological collapse. XR’s foundational demands shaped our vision:
These global principles resonated locally. But we also knew that in Connecticut, the emergency is not hypothetical—it is here. Decisions are being made today that will determine whether we preserve or destroy the ecosystems and communities we depend on.
So we founded XR SWCT with a commitment to build power and take responsibility. Our early milestones include:
We are not here to wait for permission. We are here to resist, reveal, and reimagine.
Tied to a Global Rebellion
Extinction Rebellion began in 2018 as a coordinated act of defiance against the political and corporate systems driving collapse. Since then, XR chapters around the world have used nonviolent direct action, truth-telling, and creative disruption to demand a livable future.
XR SWCT is proud to be part of this international network of hope and resistance. Our work links global crises to local decisions—and local courage to global transformation.
This story is still unfolding. The next chapter begins with you.
